Internet shopping comes to the high street

Ray McCann

Ray McCann established the Kiosk Systems unit at ICL and is now Business Development Manager for ICL Multimedia Solutions. Other projects completed by this group include kiosks for Argos, Nationwide Building Society and Daewoo Cars, the Citizens' Charter CD-ROM and Internet Web sites for Nature Magazine and Innovations Mail Order - the first ‘site’ in Europe to offer encrypted debit and credit card payments. An example of their work can be seen on the Internet at http://www.buckinghamgate.com, a partnership with NatWest to offer ‘Best of Britain’ shopping and information - secure payments can be made on-line in Sterling, US Dollars and Yen

Recent market research by city firm Deloittes found that shopping was regarded as ‘a chore to be avoided at all costs’ by a large proportion of the population - and as many as 55% of those under 34. The answer may have been provided by another survey by Financial Times/Datamonitor which forecast that there will be nearly 10,000 touchscreen kiosks throughout the UK be the end of the decade
