Patents: a problem for computer software?
Derrick Grover, who is retired, was formerly a Senior Executive with the British Technology Group responsible for the funding and exploitation of Intellectual Property in Information Technology. There is currently much debate concerning the merit of patents for computer software. On balance the patent agents and other members of the legal profession appear to be in favour, while the voices of protest lie mainly with the practitioners developing software in industry
